If there’s one thing we’re proud of here at Parthian, it would have to be the range of voices we send out into the world upon our pages. We remain dedicated to literature from Wales, but as we have grown, so too have our interests extended beyond the Welsh hills. Alongside our Welsh authors, we today publish voices from across the world: from Germany to France, Turkey to Canada. These global connections have inspired so many unmissable stories, stories of love and loss, life and laughter; stories we are incredibly proud to put the Parthian name to.
Two of these global voices who have found homes at Parthian are Tristan Hughes and Tyler Keevil. These hugely talented authors are both originally from Canada, and have both since settled in Wales. With their engaging prose and gripping plots, it’s no wonder Tristan and Tyler have found success.
Tristan Hughes
Tristan Hughes was born in northern Ontario, before moving to Anglesey at the age of four. He currently lives in Cardiff, and works at Cardiff University as the AHRC Fellow in Creative Writing.
Tristan is the author of five novels, including The Tower (2004), Send my Cold Bones Home (2006), Revenant (2008) and Eye Lake (2012), all set in his native Canada or his home of Wales. Tristan has also written a number of short stories, including ‘Just Like Honey’, which was published in the Welsh Gothic anthology Sing, Sorrow, Sorrow, and 'Up Here' for the Winter 2016 issue of Ploughshares. He is a winner of the Rhys Davies Short Story Prize.
Hummingbird (2017) is Tristan’s latest novel, and has received much critical praise upon its release. Lauded by Buzz Magazine as ‘an absorbing and composed tale, providing the perfect escapism,’ and by The New Welsh Review as a ‘taut, powerfully-understated novel’, Hummingbird follows fifteen-year-old Zachary Williams, who lives in an isolated Ontario hamlet, as he joins enigmatic shape-shifter Eva in a search for secrets thought long lost beneath the snow and the shadows of the forest. Tristan has a number of events coming up in order to promote and celebrate Hummingbird, including a reading at the Council Chambers, Cardiff University on 15 June, and the offical book launch at Waterstones Cardiff on 22 June. Tyler Keevil
Tyler Keevil is originally from Vancouver, and first came to the UK on a student exchange programme to Lancaster University. After graduating and living in Prague for a few years, Tyler returned to the UK, this time settling in mid-Wales. He still lives in Wales, and is a Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing at the University of Gloucestershire.
Tyler is the author of three novels. His debut, Fireball (2010), was released by us as part of our Bright Young Things series and received critical praise upon its release: The New Welsh Review described it as ‘breathlessly readable and confident’, Planet Magazine called it ‘funny, gripping and touching’ and The Western Mail said it was ‘a brilliant and memorable first novel.’ His second novel, The Drive, was released in 2013 to a positive reception. His collection of short stories, 2015’s Burrard Inlet, won the Writers' Trust of Canada / McClelland & Stewart Journey Prize and a 2015 Independent Publisher Book Award and was shortlisted for Wales Book of the Year and the Rubery International Book Award.
